Oh man you guys…
My 12-miler on Saturday SCREWED ME UP.
I felt fine the first couple of hours post-run, took a little nap on the couch and kinda drifted in and out of sleep the rest of the day. The hubby and I did leave the house briefly that night for some lattes, but I just rested.
Sunday I woke up like someone had driven their vehicle over my entire body 50,000 times. I laid in bed and then I moved to the couch back and forth back and forth. I had shooting pains coursing through my body. I was so sore it was out of control. I felt feverish, I was chilled, I felt nauseated and not nearly as hungry as I should have been.
The hardest thing to deal with? My exhaustion. I couldn’t keep my eyes open no matter how hard I tried.
I had been having this slight flu-like sensation for the past couple of weeks after harder runs, but didn’t think much of it. This 12-miler, though, just about wiped me off the face of planet earth.
Monday morning’s 4:30 AM wake-up call for work was brutal. My 12.5 hour shift following that was horrendous.
I’m still feeling exhausted. The muscle soreness is about 95% gone, but I still feel achey and exhausted. I would say that I might just have a virus, but why has this been occurring pretty much only after my hard runs? Remember my horrific 10K race from last weekend? Same sort of thing, only not as severe.
I think my hubby is kinda over me at the moment. I whined a lot this weekend and pretty much laid on the couch and moaned constantly. But oh the pain…
I paid very close attention to my pre-run and post-run fuel, I hydrated properly both before and after. I’ve been doing this long enough now to know how my body reacts and what it needs before and after. The only way I could have done it better would have been to get an IV straight into my arm of Powerade post-run.
I made sure to have a nice ratio of carbs/protein as my post-run meal within 45 minutes of being done.
I don’t get it. I’m sick of the flu-symptoms. I want to have a run where I don’t feel like poo! It’s been a while. GO AWAY CRAP!
Have you ever been totally knocked flat on your butt by a run or super hard workout/race before?

Yes, I did a 5 mile race on thanksgiving an then ran 11 miles with my sIL on sat. It was brutal, I felt awful for days. And I was with my kids at my father in laws house without my husband, I was losing it!
I am so sorry!!! Maybe you needed more rest after your last race?! Sorry!!!
I’ve never had any flu-like feelings but after my LRs I definitely schedule in time after I’ve showered and eaten to nap for an hour or two. And then I wake up as parched as if I’ve walked the Sahara. This is my lot in life.
I don’t think this has every happened to either one of us. :-/ And that sounds awful! I’m so sorry!
