14 Day Challenge…Just say “no” to coffee.

Holy cow. I can’t even believe that I am writing this post, but here I am, sitting on my comfy couch, in my new running capris, watching old episodes of Grey’s, and I’m WRITING THIS POST.

Ya’ll…it has been suggested to me on a few too many occasions lately that perhaps I should take a closer look at my caffeine intake. And by “caffeine intake” it really means coffee. I don’t eat sweets, I don’t drink pop (soda, coke – whatever you call it).  I drink 24 oz. of the “good stuff” loaded with cream every single morning. If I don’t have coffee, a headache will ensue somewhere between 2-4PM guaranteed.

Coffee is my vice.

Some people go out for happy hour, I go out for coffee.

I have been known to bring my 64 oz. (1/2 a pot) cup to work on occasion to get through my 12 hour shifts. Yep.

And I think these “professionals” in my life concerned about my caffeine intake, might just have a valid point. So while I can’t just give up cold turkey, I’m going to try something new. I’m going to try tea. Tonight I found myself wandering the grocery aisle and staring at a million different boxes of tea. Right away I found the “caffeine meter” on the side of a couple of boxes and realized I could have my same 24 oz cup and have it be equivalent to 2 cups of coffee with the tea instead of 4. Mind game people. If I believe I drank 4 cups of something with caffeine, perhaps it’ll make me “stay awake.”

So I’m going to start tomorrow. No matter how much it sucks, I’m going to go 14 days without ANY COFFEE TOUCHING MY LIPS. Are you frightened for me? I certainly am. But I’m willing to give it a go. And I know I have some friends right now that are seriously considering ending our friendship after reading this post. Don’t worry…I can still get tea at coffee shops!!! :)

So we’ll see how this goes. I will be blogging about it as I go. Just keep reminding me that this is better for me. Am I going to give up coffee altogether? HECK NO. But it can’t be my vice anymore.

No coffee until October 7th. Holy cow.

  1. Good luck with that. I went a long time without coffee (the WORST 3 days of my life…LOL) and found I couldn’t stick with it.

  2. Karen says:

Much luck! I was able to do it when pregnant and it wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be.

  3. This is so funny….I just stopped drinking coffee on Monday! I have a BAD (but it’s so good) obsession with Caribou. I was stopping every single day for awhile and it was getting out of hand. I want to go back to my once a week Caribou treat. :) All day Monday I had a horrible headache and finally at 5:00 I had to take an excedrin, I couldn’t take it anymore. Tues. and Wed. weren’t so bad and I’ve actually noticed I’m not dragging as much in the afternoon without the caffeine. Good luck! You can do it. :)

Hope you can make it through the 2 weeks Courtenay! Good Luck! :)

  5. Dana says:

Girl you’re CRAZY ::sips on 20 oz. coffee:: GOOD LUCK — I did it for a week and the first two days were misery but afterwards I was fine. Are you giving it up because of the caffeine or because of cream/sugar?

    • Courtenay says:

Health concerns…trying to see if limiting my caffeine intake (which is only in coffee) will help ease some things! Not cutting it out altogether, but I really REALLY have an addiction. Drink more coffee FOR ME! :)

Good luck! Though I have to wonder at the motivation – are you really doing this for you or because some people think you should? Personally – I am a coffee drinker. I really thoroughly enjoy a good cup of coffee – not for just the caffeine, but for the whole experience of it. I used to drink it all day long, but realized for better sleeping that about 20 oz before noon is what makes me happiest. At noon, I switch to water. I also sip water while I’m sipping coffee. But frankly, what’s wrong with having one vice you enjoy that doesn’t hurt anyone – and doesn’t really damage you when it comes down to it? Coffee has benefits beyond caffeine just like tea. Everything has a pro and con sheet – coffee’s is pretty balanced. I don’t drink too much alcohol, I eat healthy, I exercise, I’m not an -aholic anything, I pay my bills and go to work everyday. I should be allowed to enjoy my java in peace – and you should too.

I have health issues right now that are possibly being exacerbated by the amount of my caffeine intake. These people suggesting this are health care professionals (my doctors). While I enjoy the experience of coffee drinking as well, I feel my health is more important. So that’s my sole motivation. :)

  7. Christian says:

Courtenay, you are a braver soul than I am. I tried giving up coffee before and it wasn’t easy, it wasn’t fun. I did however manage to cut my coffee intake to a total of 2 cups a day, and rarely after noon. Good on you for taking care of your health! Good luck!

  8. Heidi Nicole says:

Good luck! I think you’ll be fine since you are at least getting some caffeine. I went completely cold turkey on Mt Dew about 6 years ago. Going from 3-4 cans a day to 0 cans is horrible. My head throbbed, I was sleepy, ornery, snippety and for the first week or so my hands would just shake! Not pretty!

PS…should we be frightened for you or the people you work with! ;)
